This post documents my first week in GIS5050 Introduction to
Geographic Information Systems. The Overview of ArcGIS lab
assignment is designed to get students familiar with data management, Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Pro terminology, and ArcGIS Help.
The student learning outcomes include:
- Access ArcGIS Pro software
- Prepare folders for lab
- Become familiar with ArcGIS Help
- Learn Key terms about ArcGIS Pro
Lab 1 involved
accessing the assignment data via the UWF Argo Apps File Explorer and copying the
data files to Google drives in folders labeled GIS5050. Other tasks included proper file labeling, extracting data, viewing contents,
opening a new project in ArcGIS Pro, saving to specified folders, exploring
settings, basic interface locations, changing shapefile symbology, creating a
layout, and exporting the map to a jpeg. Our first lab deliverables
include creating a World Cities map jpeg in ArcGIS Pro.
The above World Cities map displays two layers of data: cities and countries. I manipulated the data symbology according to directions and picked a basemap for contrast. The Cities shapefile utilizes the black “Circle 1” symbol from the Symbol Gallery. The World_Countries shapefile contains data on countries' 2007 population, displayed in a graduated red color ramp divided into seven classes.
While this World Cities map
may be a bit crude, the first lab assignment was an excellent exercise to introduce the
ArcGIS program while getting practice in file management.
